About the event

ABOUT THE EVENT

In this seminar we discuss the concept of Freedom and how it may impact (artistic) leadership and models, leaders' formation and approach to their teams, and more. This seminar is moderated by NHLP-EU fellow Gaia Vimercati, with guest speaker Bauke Lievens, who will address her previous work on freedom and agency in artistic creation, with reference to the project The Circus Dialogues (2013-2023).

Freedom is often referred to as a concept of "being free to do whatever you like" or "having no restrictions". If we think closer at the concept of freedom, it is not absolute freedom we strive for, but the right conditions that work for us. The conditions which facilitate our wellbeing and best practice. In this seminar we look at what our ultimate freedom looks like? What do we need and what can we do without it? How do we differentiate between "freedom to" and "freedom from"? What are the enabling conditions for freedom, and who/what is responsible to nourish these? Most importantly - how do we balance freedom and unfreedom, and how do we position ourselves when we witness infringement upon others' freedom?

ABOUT THE MODERATOR

Gaia is in the board of directors of Quattrox4, a contemporary circus centre based in Milan, where she is cultural project manager and independent researcher since 2016. She is theoretician by vocation but pragmatic at heart, so she chose contemporary circus as the main ground for her research.

ABOUT THE GUEST SPEAKER

Bauke works as a dramaturge for circus, theatre and dance. She studied Performance Studies at the University of Ghent and Philosophy of Contemporary Arts at the Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona.  She has published various articles on the topic of contemporary circus in CircusMagazine, Rekto:Verso and Courant. Bauke teaches Dramaturgy and Written Research at the Drama Department of KASK, School of Arts (Ghent, Belgium).
